static's back
Ok what can i say i'm exstatic, lol. What a shocking development..he put a shock to my system. Its static the man virgil hawkins. I ran into this comic a while back when it was hot but wasn't really into it at the time. But now that i've matured and seen the comic it got me interested so ya know what i got static all the static i could find. I love this comic its like a comic for the ages, it deals with all the issues that need to be dealt with in our society. I love how it works the fluency, the art and of course teh writing. I don't know why i didn't find this sooner now i've made quest for myself trying to get my hands on all the static i can i belive issues 1-45. I recommend this to any comic fan of any gender and age. Its the kind of thing that any person can enjoy even those who aren't into comics. The teen angst, super heroes using their brains not their brawn. And that's all i can say..or can think of right now at least

The best overlooked title of the year.
This book recounts the origin and first adventures of Static. The artwork by John Paul Leon is beautifully done, and the painted coloring adds a real sense of quality. The story really captures the feel of Static's everyday life. It is different from the TV show in the details, but the characters, feel, and attitude are the same. I highly recommend it.

Their Morals and Ours
Published in Paperback by Pathfinder Press (October, 1992)
Author: Leon Trotsky
Average review score:

The Great Humanity has said enough
With morality being preached at us by a president whose pockets are stuffed with Enron dollars, who seeks to bomb and murder around the world, this short book explains a real morality, the morality that flows from the struggle of the great humanity as Che once called it, of the great humanity to say that we have had enough exploitation, enough oppression, enough poverty, enough disease, enough sexism, enough racism, enough throttling of the rights of Africa, Asia, and Latin America, enough. Morality flows from the struggle of oppressed humanity to free itself from the big business rich who pay the priests, the professors, and the cops. We need this book to stand up against them.

A spectacular polemic on the dangers of liberal morality
As the questions of how solve the increasing crisis of capitalim becomes more pertinant every day, an old debate must be re-hashed. Are the politics of Lesser Evilism and the Social Democratic parties of the world a viable alternative to the atrocities of the right? Is marxist ideolgy correctly associated with the horrors of Stalinist Russia and the Eastern Bloc? Do the Ends justify the Means? In this classic debate, Leon Trotsky the great revolutionary socialist, answers these questions with the fire and focus that they deserve. He and the liberal thinker, John Dewey, debate the morality of the means of liberal capitalist and socialist tactics and resolve the question of whether either or both can accomplish a moral end.

Turning Points in El Paso Texas
Published in Hardcover by Mangan Books (December, 1985)
Author: Leon Claire Metz
Average review score:

Metz Knows El Paso
This book describes the primordial beginnings of the Rio Grande to the evolution of the international gateway called El Paso. During the city's moments of crisis , and achievement, its "turning points" are all succinctly told-the coming of the military, the Civil War in the West, the violence of the gunfighters, the shady ladies, and boundary disputes. Metz is a sought after lecturer on gunfighters of the Southwest, and, in 1985, he was honored by the Western Writers of America with the Saddleman Award for his overall contributions to western writing.

This is an excellent book; concise, well-written.
Metz does a great job of telling the history of the city. He is an effective writer and knows how to hold the reader's interest. He is good at making sure that each of the ethnic groups within the city are represented and their migration explained. Clarity is certainly one of his strong suits. If you want to know more about the city, this 125-pager is a great place to start.

Valley of Promises (Matanuska, 1)
Published in Paperback by Broadman & Holman Publishers (July, 2001)
Author: Bonnie Leon
Average review score:

A Woman's Perogative
Laurel Hasper has made up her mind what she wants to do with her life and who she doesn't want to do it with. But God has a way of revealing his plans for her life. Will Laurel leave Alaska to go to college and then build a career? Or will she stay and marry? And if she marries, will it be Robert? Or Adam? I liked this book, not only for the unfolding of romance, but also for the insight about the people who settled Matanuska Valley and the perils they had to overcome, including Ray Townsend who doesn't want anyone moving into his valley who doesn't suffer as much as he did when he first came. This story is a must read.

Valley of Promises
It is the time of the Great Depression. Drought has destroyed the land and many farmers are forced to make desperate decisions in order to survive. In Valley of Promises, we trace the journey of Will Hasper and his family who leave their home and most of their possessions behind to join a colony of settlers in the far off Matanuska Valley of Alaska. The move involves sacrifice, heartbreak and loss. As they struggle to carve a new life from an untamed land, they must trust in the promises and provisions of God. Woven through the pattern of history and human drama, is a thread of romance that draws the reader into the very heart of each character. A great read. I can't wait for book number two.

Village Poet

The Village Poet
The Village Poet is an intriguing and insightful book that looks at the challenges that life has to offer. With several interesting antecdotes that all ethnicities can relate to the book examines the every day challenges we as humans face. The book allows the reader to discover new and optimisttic ways to achieve success and encourages people to accept new challenges and follow what is in their hearts. This is a must read book for anyone who has ever faced ethical or acceptance isssues. It is a book that every enriched person should own.

The Village Poet
I think Leon Newton, who is the author, basically tells it like it is. He really impressed me with this story. In this story, he is trying his best to convince people not to give up on life. People should always strive to be the best. If there are problems or concerns turn to God and he will make a way. The author wants people to appreciate life and not take it for granted. Sometimes you have to deal with the cards you were dealt. I agree with the statement that the author made saying "Remember, my people, many are called but only a few are chosen." I think this means strive and work hard to accomplish your goals and believe in God and he will be by your side every step of the way. The author also spoke of bringing up your children to be wise, respectful, and prepared for the future. The aruthor was very sincere about what he believes. It was exciting to me to read that the author started writing at such a young age. It's not really an expectation of a young child to write books and manuscripts. That doesn't mean that that child is not a normal child. It just means that child has his or her mind on other things besides playing outside and watching television. Instead, the child enjoys reading and writing. After reading this book, I realized that a person has to strive to be the best in life. That person has to be wise, learn, and listen. Never let a person tell you that you ar ignorant and that you will never succeed.

The War Correspondence of Leon Trotsky: The Balkan Wars 1912-13
Published in Hardcover by Pathfinder Press (December, 1993)
Author: Leon Trotsky
Average review score:

2000, and still the same
What's most frightening about this book is that ever so often I had the impression that I was reading about the present-day situation on the Balkan. Yes, the old dynasties were swept away in the aftermath of WWI, so the names have changed, but the peoples on the Balkan peninsula are still the playthings of international capital and its henchmen in the parliaments. Unfortunately most modern reporters either hardly know how to formulate a correct phrase or have no clue about the social and economic background of the situation they write about. L.D. Trotsky, on the other hand, combined a keen eye for the complex intersection of economy, politics and religion with an expressive style. Not to forget his vitriolic humour. (And yes, I loved his snide remark about Austrian tardiness - verrry true!;-)) Despite the intricacy of the issues, these reports are easily readable.

An indispensable reference on the background of Balkan fight
Trotsky's war correspondence from the Balkan Wars that just preceded World War I is more than a fascinating collection of journalism by a dramatic and passionate figure in modern history. It is also an indispensable backgrounder for the fighting going on in the region today. Much of Trotsky's reportage, e.g. on Serbian attempts to reduce the Albanian population of Kosova by mass murder, will echo very loudly. To his credit, Trotsky sided whole-heartedly with the Albanian victims, in a way that shames the modern defenders of media neutrality and global passivity in the face of ethnic terrorism. The beginning of all wisdom on the modern Balkan wars.

Where Salmon Come to Die: An Autumn on Alaska's Raincoat
Published in Paperback by Pruett Publishing Co. (October, 1993)
Authors: Leon Kolankjewica and Leon Kolankiewicz
Average review score:

An account of life in a remote fieldcamp in Southeast Alaska
'Where Salmon come to die' gives an accurate account of what life is like in a remote Southeast Alaska (Department of Fish and Game) fieldcamp. This book contains wonderful desciptions of the pristine beauty of the land and its inhabitants; a beauty which has been lost in many other developped places. The accounts are based on the authors diary and on correspondences with his family. I verify that the story is true and believe I can do so, since I was the other person who lived with the author in that fieldcamp on Chichagof Island back in the fall of 1982.

A timeless spirit of fascination with nature's wonders.
We read reports of declining fish stocks, but seldom peerbehind the human drama in gathering these statistics. LeonKolankiewicz opens a window to the distant, mysterious, isolated and sometimes hostile world of data collectors on Alaska's raincoast in autumn. Migratory habits of spawning salmon never evolved to fit neatly within the convenience of Alaska's Department of Fish and Game workers. The salmons' final run to the place of their upstream birth, and death, coincide with brutally cold and damp conditions. Who might apply for jobs as data gatherers with the Department, and what might they think about when reaching this remote destination at the last American frontier? Here's your answer on 126 memory-filled pages. The book is a compilation of the author's letters to his parents in autumn 1982 while writing from his tent on the raincoast, in the company of bears and natural hazards. The majestic setting inspires a literary account with almost poetic quality. Leon's respect for the intended recipients of the letters imparts another worthy dimension to this book. He draws the reader into an intimate relationship with his parents. As parents, may we all be so thoughtful and compassionate to merit the lasting tribute paid by this author in his letters home. The real life adventure and purpose captured within these letters makes this book a worthy source of information for anyone thinking about writing home.

Writings of Leon Trotsky, 1936-37
Published in Hardcover by Pathfinder Press (December, 1978)
Authors: Leon Trotsky, Naomi Allen, and George Breitman
Average review score:

the fight vs. fascism and war-- lessons for today
The years 1936-37 were decisive in the struggles of working people to defeat fascism and prevent the holocaust that was called World War II.The Great Depression was devasting the working people round the world. In this book, the co-leader with Lenin of the Bolshevik Revolution of 1917, Leon Trotsky, exposes the Moscow witch hunt trials, through which the bureaucrat-dictator Stalin ( NOT a communist ! ) began the process of the final rubbing out of communist opposition to his regime. The civil war in Spain raged and was in its crucial phase: would the workers and peasants of Spain defeat the fascists through revolutionary means or would the coalition of liberals, "democratic" socialists ( read: pro-capitalist "socialists" ), Stalinists, and sadly, anarchist leaders who sold themselves and their powerful unions to the reform-ist coalition - the Popular Front-open the gates to the fascists, making World War II inevitable ? How could working people help out the fight of the Chinese people against in Japanese invasion of 1937: the opening guns of World War II? How to build a revolutionary leadership, both in the countries mentioned above, around the world, and in the U.S. itself? In this valuable book and two others-"The Spanish Revolution" and "Leon Trotsky on China", also published by Pathfinder Press, the great revolutionist poses these question and attempts to answer them in terms of action. As world capitalism sinks into a new depression, and as world imperialism, Yankee imperialism in the first rank, drives us working people towards fascism and a new world war, those who fight for a new and human world in the streets and on the strike picket lines need this book BAD.

Fighting with reason and hope Day by day
This volume begins with Trotsky's writing on board the ship Ruth the Norwegian government used to deport him to Mexico. His "In Socialist Norway," is a humorous well-written account of how the Social Democrats who ruled Norway in the thirties, buckled under to the pressure of native fascists and Stalin to first restrict Trotsky's right to defend himself against the slanders of the Moscow trials, and then placed him under house arrest until he was invited to Mexico. I found his analysis of Kamenev, Zinoviev, and Stalin himself, in his articles written in Mexico explaining the Moscow trials to be interesting studies in how personal character is a factor in revolutionary leadership and retreat from that leadership. Also very interesting is the correspondence and proposals Trotsky wrote around building the commission led by American philosopher John Dewey that investigated the Moscow trials. As always with all of the Trotsky Writings Volumes, there is a week-to-week, sometimes day-by-day, chronicle of world events, and of Trotsky's struggle to build a revolutionary movement.
